Excellent Guide-Notes Approach to Reading Music
I'm very happy with Lynn Freeman Olson's Right from the start: a rapid piano reader, which was highly recommended online by renowned piano pedagogue Marvin Blickenstaff. It's for piano students who are just beginning to decipher the treble and bass staves. The focus is on starting with the three note-reading keys (Treble G, Middle C, Bass F) and adding other guide notes (Treble C, Bass C) as reading progresses. Olson has saved me the trouble of writing all this out. It's as though he wrote the examples for what I'm saying in the lesson! The piano methods that work best in the long term use the Middle C and guide notes approach. This first year reading-exercise book (which doesn't pretend to be a book of songs) can be used in conjunction with any other method, with students of any age, and as an aid to reading music of any style. This little gem is a classic, the essential side-dish that every piano teacher should be using to introduce and solidify music reading concepts.
