De première vond plaats op 12 februari 1924 in de Aeolian Hall te New York, Paul Whiteman dirigeerde zijn BigBand, aangevuld met een strijkersectie en de componist was zelf de pianosolist. Gershwin improviseerde tijdens het concert nog omdat het geheel nog niet helemaal op papier stond. Het glissando van de klarinet in de opening van het werk was een grapje van de klarinettist uit de band en werd door Gershwin overgenomen.
George Gershwin used elements of classical music and jazz in this well known and loved work. The premiere of this piece was in Aeolian Hall in New York on February 12, 1924. Paul Whiteman led his big band, which was augmented with a string section, with the composer himself playing the piano solo. Gershwin improvised quite a lot during the concert as much of the music was yet to be written down on paper. The famous clarinet glissando in the opening was actually a joke from the clarinetist in the band, which Gershwin later wrote into the score.

La première a eu lieu le 12 février 1924 dans le Aeolian Hall à New York, Paul Whitemann était alors le chef d’orchestre de son Big Band, qui pour l’occasion était complété d’une section de cordes, et le compisiteur jouait lui-même le piano solo. Gershwin a improvisé pendant ce concert parce que la composition n’était pas encore complètement écrite. Le glissando de clarinette dans l’ouverture était une plaisanterie du clarinettiste du Big Band, et a ensuite été repris par Gershwin.

Gershwin improvisierte während des Konzertes noch, weil es noch nicht vollständig auf Papier stand. Das Glissando der Klarinette bei der Eröffnung des Werkes war ein Witz des Klarinettisten von der Band und wurde von Gershwin übernommen.
