Reaching the Summit is a composition for beginning bands in their first year of playing. Beginning band students are continuously learning new skills on their instruments and striving to eventually play a full piece of music with non-unison parts. These young musicians are pushing themselves to “reach their summit.” In mm. 33–36 and again in the final few measures the students play a repeated syncopated rhythm. They build upon each others sound to reach the peak of their musical journey in Reaching the Summit.
