Queen Mary's Funeral March and Canzona by Henry Purcell Brass Quintet - Digital Sheet Music

By Henry Purcell
Brass Ensemble, Brass Quintet French Horn, Trombone, Trumpet, Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1779829

Composed by Henry Purcell. Arranged by Dave Nicolette. This edition: pdf. Baroque. 12 pages. Dave Nicolette #1339831. Published by Dave Nicolette (A0.1779829).

Henry Purcell (1659-1695) composed this music late in his life for the funeral of Queen Mary. A few months later, it was played at his own funeral.

Baroque music lends itself very well to brass ensembles. This arrangement is for the standard Brass Quintet instrumentation of 2 Trumpets, Horn, Trombone, and Tuba.

This piece - at least, the stately March - is often performed today by various ensembles, but it is usually presented more-or-less as a chorale. This arrangement opens with a chorale, and then the March begins with rhythmic chords in the low instruments, imitating the drums that would have accompanied the music in its time. The melodic line is embellished by the 2nd Trumpet in a Baroque-inspired style. The closing phrases in the March feature moving eighth notes in octaves in the Trombone and Tuba, which are not part of the original music, as far as I know. The canzona is presented in a straightforward way with no additional embellishments.
