Prooimia are hymns - the two terms were occasionally used interchangeably - in which the singers
"dedicated themselves to the gods as they wished" (Plutarch 'On Music'). A prooimion could also
have provided the opportunity for more extensive praise of a host city. These ancient traditions are
combined and transposed into a contemporary concept and give a conceptual dimension to the composition.
