The popular motet Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden is one of the biggest puzzles in Bach research. There are several things which do not quite fit together and the sources – all dating from the 19th century – help very little in clarifying matters. Scholars have even disputed whether Bach was the composer. But it is more probable that in its present form, we are dealing with an arrangement of a work by Bach, whether it is by Bach himself, or from a later date. In its surviving form the motet is without doubt a magnificent achievement. The Carus edition attempts to remedy the biggest problems in the text underlay with careful interventions in the text.
