The cantata "Praise the Lord, O my spirit" is one of the relatively small group of Bach’s so-called "Ratswahlkantaten", cantatas which were performed in honor of the inauguration of the Leipzig town council, and in particular at the council’s express request in a festive church service in St Nicholas’s Church. This cantata was probably performed on 26 August 1748. It is distinguished by its festive, bright opening movement in several sections, at the center of which stands the two-part quotation from Psalm 103, set as a double fugue. / This version of the cantata for the election of the council (BWV3 69.2) is the later one. The earlier version, composed for the 12th Sunday after Trinity (BWV3 69.1), is published under the number Carus 31.069/50.
