The Polovtsian Dances are four dances from the opera "Prince Igor" by Alexander Borodin. In the opera they are performed with choirs, but in concerts and in the theatre as ballet, they are heard in a version for orchstra alone. The music has an oriental character: the Polovtsians are the Turkic people of the Kypchaks. The arrangement is kept in the original key for symphony orchestra and was commissioned and first time performed in 2008 by Mozarteum Wind Philharmonic Salzburg conducted by Hansjoerg Angerer at the Great Hall of the Mozarteum Foundation in Salzburg, Austria.
