On the morning of September 11, 2001, while visiting family in Seattle, I received a call that would mark me forever: “Turn on the TV.” In the moments that followed, I witnessed the second plane strike the World Trade Center—an image that has remained etched in my memory ever since. Years later, after moving to New York City, I felt a deep artistic need to respond. This work was born as a tribute to the city and to the lives lost that day.
Inspired by New York’s extraordinary cultural diversity, the original piece centers on a single universal message: Peace on Earth, set in multiple languages—Latin, Spanish, English, French, Italian, and German. As each language emerges, the harmony evolves through shifting chord progressions, symbolizing both the individuality of each culture and the shared human longing for peace. The repetition of the phrase across languages serves as a powerful reminder that the desire for unity and compassion transcends borders.
In 2025, the work was arranged for Flex Orchestra in a version commissioned by Dr. Luis Víquez and the Rhode Island Philharmonic Youth Repertory Orchestra. This adaptation makes the piece accessible to ensembles of varied instrumentation and size, allowing more performers to share in its message of remembrance, inclusivity, and hope.
Peace on Earth is a reflective and expressive addition to any concert program, offering both musical depth and meaningful context. It provides ensembles with an opportunity to engage audiences through a work that honors memory, celebrates diversity, and calls for unity through a message the entire world can understand.
