Overture to Benvenuto Cellini by Hector Berlioz Chamber Music - Digital Sheet Music

By Hector Berlioz

This work has been adapted from an original orchestral score by Berlioz. It is designed for recital/concert performances. However, it stands as a great work just for study by trumpet players of all levels from High School through Professional joining the great concertos of Haydn and Hummel.Tempos indicated are for college/professional level players. Others will find that the work is adaptable at a wide range of tempos. Players should experiment to find a tempo the work for them. Players will note the possible use of octave choices and/or ossia at certain places in the work. Each player should choose what works best for their own level of performance as either works as well as the other. The historical significance of this work will be especially pleasing to audiences and may be easily recognized by some. It also offers an additional work from the classical period for programming considerations. Pianists will find the accompaniment to their liking since they may not have had the opportunity to play much by Berlioz. If the key for the work has been changed from the original score, it has be chosen to accommodate a reasonable key for Bb players and to keep the range for Bb trumpet from f# to C2 (High C) with few exceptions. This piece is also available for trumpet in D. That trumpet part is available from the arranger for an additional fee. He can be contacted through email at: [email protected]: When we start an arrangement we don't always know exactly what we will end up with when arranging a full orchestral score for solo trumpet and piano. When we ended up with this one we knew we had a gem on our hands. We hope you will agree. This is a fine work by Berlioz, one that few people know or have ever heard. But, by all means this work deserves to be heard and our new solo trumpet arrangement can make that happen. As typical with the other works by Berlioz in the LMP catalogue, it begins with an impetuous opening allegro tempo that gives a foreshadowing of the main body of the work, but leads instead to an even more typical lyrical section originally for flute. But, this section is not totally slow, there are some nice runs in a far away flat key. This section is nicely harmonized by Berlioz. The main body of the work arrives about three minutes into the work and picks up where the opening left off. This work has its dramatic sections but is lively with triplets alternating with duplets throughout. Exceptional interplay between the trumpet and piano. There is a dramatic ending and one that will bring the audience to their feet in appreciation of the skill of the performers and the fine compositional work by Berlioz. Like many of the works published by LMP there can be a wide variance in tempos in both major sections - performers should choose a tempo that works best for them. A little less allegro will work just fine, but a more aggressive allegro for those who want a technical challenge will bring an even great excitement. We kept the original key of G even though the Bb part will have 3 sharps but both C and Bb parts are quite playable and for those who like the smaller trumpets, the D part works nicely for this piece. Range goes up to a high concert b only in one place after a few measures of rest, lowest note is low G.
