The basis of this piano piece is Mussorgsky's "The Great Gate of Kiev" from “Pictures at an Exhibition”. It is a suite conceived while walking through a memorial exhibition for Viktor Alexandrovich Hartmann (1834-1873). He is Mussorgsky's friend of the painter who died young.
