Composed by Dave Nicolette. Arranged by Dave Nicolette. This edition: pdf. 21st Century, March. 93 pages. Dave Nicolette #1324463. Published by Dave Nicolette (A0.1764125).This piece holds a steady 120 tempo throughout. You could characterize it as a march, but I think of it more as a "walking song," as suggested by the title - a line of Galdalf's from Lord of the Rings. The music pushes forward, putting a spring in your step. Fun to play, if I may say so myself.
I don't mean to step out of my lane, but in hindsight I think this piece is consistent with advice from composer Samuel R. Hazo, when he writes about crafting music suitable for student musicians. This is the kind of music a high school band would enjoy playing, in the same way as some of Hazo's pieces are well-loved by young musicians. Not comparing myself, of course; it's just an impression.
What's good for a high school band is also, usually, good for a community band. Except for the solo passages, there's plenty of "cover" and people needn't feel shy about tackling it. Emperor Joseph II might criticize it for having "too many notes," as his film persona was wont to do. Admittedly, there are plenty of notes for everyone.
The form is ABA with some development of both thematic elements. Every section is highlighted at least once, as well as several individual parts: Bb Clarinet 1, Bb Clarinet 2, Oboe 1, Bassoon 1, Trumpet 1, Euphonium, Flute 1, Flute 2, Piccolo.
At around five minutes' duration, it fits neatly into any concert band program.
