Mefistofele
This was a well-printed score. Yes, it is a paperback edition, but seems well bound. This is an opera that I have never seen in a critical edition, which would prove interesting, as the original version was much longer. The one thing a piano vocal score loses is the incredible orchestration of the opera, especially the scene where Faust is saved. Everything is designed to reflect the joys of heaven. And the orchestration is masterful. However, this is a piano vocal score, so anyone learning the opera, I would suggest you also use the full orchestral score to really come to fully understand and feel the real greatness of the music. Was Boita a genius? I can't say, as he only wrote two operas and I am not sure of how much other music. He is noted mostly as a librettist. And he was fabulous in that department (and he wrote the libretti for his own operas). His version of the Faust story covers the story more completely, even if the events are brief, than Gounod or any other version. Great buy.
