Media vita (1991), for piano trio, takes its title from the John Sheppard (1515-c.1559) motet of the same name. The motet's text is lines from the funeral service, 'In the midst of life, we are in death'. Although I am extremely inspired by Sheppard's great work, and always interested in the expressive effects of modal polyphony, I did not adopt his techniques to write the piece. My response to the lines he set is from a contemporary perspective. Written in 1991 for Ixion's Brighton Festival concert and dedicated to Ixion's director, Andrew Toovey.
