This is an energetic solo piano piece, with a strong rhythmic drive, a profusion of meters and some jazz/fusion harmonies, as well as some Elizabethan influences. The Mattachins is a sword dance, and a well known instance is found in Peter Warlock's Capriol suite. This one takes the slightly brutal edges off a fighting war-dance, softening them with soulful harmonies and mellow, reflective interludes. Would make a good encore piece, or rhythmic etude for more advanced pianists.
