The maiden, who has been exiled from her home, flees into a nearby forest, where she meets the dragon. After an initial hostile confrontation, upon further examination, they realize that they are very similar - both despised by the world they live in. This leads to the two joining forces to survive. Throughout most of the piece, the soprano and bassoon parts echo each other, signifying the similar thoughts they both have individually. At the end of the piece, the two voices finally become more in-sync with each other, just as the characters do in the story.
