"Nature keeps inspiring me.”
Komorebi was born from that simple idea and from a heartfelt request by Rebeca Ordóñez and Esteban Barquero to create a new work for piano and wind symphony. Soon after, Rebeca shared with me the beautiful Japanese word komorebi (木漏れ日), which describes the sunlight as it gently filters through the leaves of trees. That image became the poetic and sonic foundation of the piece.
The first musical sketches appeared at the end of 2022, and the work was completed in February 2024. Throughout the composition, the ensemble itself becomes a living landscape: the brass section embodies the warmth and brilliance of the sun, while the woodwinds, supported by delicate percussion colors, represent the trees and the movement of their foliage.
The opening section contrasts a vibrant, energetic introduction with an intimate dialogue between the piano and a choir-like brass texture that gradually blends with the rest of the ensemble. Near the end of this section, a brief “cha cha cha” rhythm emerges—a personal touch that places the composer within the musical scene, drawing from his Latin American roots.
The second section begins with the marimba and a lyrical clarinet melody, creating a more reflective atmosphere. Here, the conversation between brass and woodwinds becomes more pronounced: ideas interrupt, complement, and gently transform one another, like shifting light through branches.
The work concludes with a short, tender coda inspired by the character of a bolero. In just nine measures, the music settles into a calm, suspended moment, shaped by soft dynamics and a subtle dialogue between piano, double bass, and light percussion, while airy textures from the ensemble evoke the sensation of wind moving through trees.
Komorebi offers performers a vivid, expressive soundscape and audiences a luminous, cinematic experience—an homage to light, nature, and the quiet poetry found in a single moment of sunlight.
