The title Knocking at Your Heart’s Door is a metaphor open to different interpretations. Some may find references to romantic relationships whilst others may link it to the appearance of luck, the achievement of success or a call from a higher power. Underlying all of these lies a profound and universal meaning. The connection and understanding of our true nature as pure infinite beings.
In our everyday activities, and through sensations, feelings and states of consciousness, we are constantly hinted or reminded of this special connection. For instance, peace of mind may suddenly permeate when lying on a comfy couch after a long day at work. Happiness may be experienced when receiving excellent news from a significant other. An overwhelming sense of togetherness may be felt when sharing a beautiful sight with friends. All of these are the “knocking at your heart’s door” moments that help us understand what we are essentially made of.
This piece is written as a ballad or modern aria da capo. The main theme, accompanied by a syncopated “knock on the door” pattern, blends A major with A aeolian dominant, and is rich in appoggiaturas and rubato phrasing. The second section continues in a toccata like manner in A minor and later evolves into a sweet flowing melody with Spanish flavours. The da capo section is a reflective variation of the initial theme followed by a tender Coda.
