Intricate Ensemble Texture, Requires Careful Rehearsal
As an ensemble coach, I appreciate the intricate textures and dynamic interplay in Killer Tango. It's an excellent piece for developing nuanced brass quintet performance, with clear part-leading and effective voicings. The arrangement supports strong ensemble cohesion, though it's important to note the score has some discrepancies with individual parts regarding rehearsal marks and dynamics. This requires careful attention during initial rehearsals, but the musicality is worth it.

Solid Gig Piece, Check Score vs. Parts
Killer Tango by Canadian Brass is a solid choice for a brass quintet gig. The arrangement is engaging and well-suited for events, offering that distinctive jazz-tango flair. While individual parts are generally accurate and readable, be aware that the score and parts have some noted discrepancies in rehearsal markings and dynamics. Best practice is to rehearse with parts primarily and verify any score-based cues ahead of time to avoid surprises.

So Much Fun to Play!
Absolutely love playing Killer Tango! It’s a joy to dig into this Canadian Brass classic by Sonny Kompanek. While it presents a good challenge, an adult learner can definitely achieve a satisfying performance on their individual part with practice. The tango and jazz elements are super fun, and you really feel like you're playing a vibrant, iconic piece. Highly recommend for any brass player looking for a rewarding and enjoyable ensemble piece.

Excellent for Advanced Brass Students
Killer Tango is a fantastic piece for serious brass students looking to tackle dynamic ensemble work. The individual parts are clearly engraved and present an intermediate to advanced challenge, excellent for developing rhythmic precision and expressive playing in a quintet setting. While the score does have minor discrepancies with the parts (good to know for rehearsals!), the material itself is a wonderful pedagogical tool for ensemble coaching.

Poorly written
Many, many disappointing and ridiculous typos. First off, the rehearsal markings are different on the parts compared to the score. For example, rehearsal marking E is on measure 66 on the score, for the trombone part, it is mm 62. A lot of notes don't match on the score compared to the individual parts, dynamics at the very beginning was not marked at all, most slur marks carry over empty measures of rests. I think the individual parts are okay but please do not refer to the score (at least in rehearsals).
