'Juba' is one of the earliest and possibly best compositions by R. Nathaniel Dett. Majoring in composition and piano at Oberlin, in 1908, Dett was the first black person to earn a Bachelor of Music degree. A few years later he received a masters from Eastman, then honorary Doctorate from both Oberlin and Howard University. Most of Dett's music-writing and music-making was devoted to the music of his people. 'Juba' is the result of a well-schooled composer making effective use of elements of ragtime. A Summy-Birchard publlications.

Juba Dance from In the Bottoms by Nathaniel Dett
I had the great privilage and honor to be taught this piece by Grammy nominated recording and Steinway concert artist Denver Oldham who recorded it for New World Records. His interpretation is quite the best I've ever heard... Percy Grainger, who made the piece famous, played it much too fast. Dett cautions that if played too fast the gracefulness of the dance is lost. (You can hear Denver's Juba on You Tube, as well as selections from other albums, which I heartily reccomend.) And please tackle Juba... it is difficult but so worth it. (Denver told me it was as hard as the Rach's I was doing--C#Min, G Min.) The rewards are great. Sadly, Denver died in 2012. I miss him.

Percy Grainger played this as an encore...was friend of the composer apparently. Great to have been able to pass copies on to two friends.. thank you RR
