“The Battle of Jericho” is one of the most powerful and expressive African-American spirituals, inspired by the biblical episode of the fall of Jericho’s walls. In the tradition of spiritual music, this image of the walls “coming down” became a metaphor for liberation and for faith strong enough to overcome any obstacle.
The choral version by Moses Hogan (1957–2003) stands as a landmark in the modern choral repertoire. His arrangement is distinguished by incisive rhythms, dramatic dynamics, and a rich polyphonic texture that evokes the collective energy of a people marching toward freedom.
