Veljo Tormis is one of Estonia's most famous composers, renowned above all for his choral music. His Forgotten Peoples is a cycle of six suites, each devoted to one of the Balto-Finnic peoples whose languages and songs have all but disappeared. In Ingrian Evenings Tormis has woven a sequence of songs around Ingrian folk melodies. Tormis' style is melodically appealing, and his works have enthralled audiences all over the world. Mesmerizing
A fantastic showpiece. I heard it for the first time this past weekend (Podium 2010, Saskatoon), sung by the U of Manitoba Singers under Elroy Friesen, and it was absolutely captivating!
