In the Steppes of Central Asia is a Symphonic Poem by Alexander Borodin. It was composed in 1880 for the 25th anniversary of the reign of Tsar Alexander II and dedicated to composer Franz Liszt. The piece of program music consists of four musical building blocks: Endless expanse of the steppe, Russian song, clatter of the caravan and the horses' hooves and Oriental way. The arrangement is kept in the original key for symphony orchestra and was commissioned and first time performed in 2008 by Mozarteum Wind Philharmonic Salzburg conducted by Hansjoerg Angerer at the Great Hall of the Mozarteum Foundation in Salzburg, Austria.
