In Impressions on Dorian Gray, composer Alexandre Guerra creates a dialogue between music and literature, inspired by Oscar Wilde’s classic novel The Picture of Dorian Gray. The concerto for piano and orchestra does not seek to narrate the story in a linear fashion, but to translate into sound the psychological tensions, fascination, and decay that inhabit the soul of the protagonist.
The piano writing alternates between brilliance and introspection — virtuosity not as mere display, but as a mirror of Dorian’s narcissism and inner turmoil. At times the piano stands as the central figure, at others as a shadow, reflecting the duality between beauty and corruption, youth and the passage of time.
The orchestra, in turn, assumes the role of conscience and atmosphere: dense string textures and suspended harmonies evoke a decadent aura; winds and brass introduce inner drama, while subtle percussion gestures mark the protagonist’s inevitable fate.
Formally, the concerto unfolds as a sequence of “impressions” — sonic tableaux connected through contrasts of texture and color. Guerra employs modern harmonies and influences from impressionism and film music, building an emotional narrative that reflects his own musical language: lyrical, imagistic, and deeply expressive.
More than a musical interpretation of Wilde’s novel, Impressions on Dorian Gray is a study of the mirror — the one in which the artist sees himself, and where sound becomes a reflection of the soul.
