This wonderful shape-note tune comes from William Walker, an important composer and arranger in the genre. "Hallelujah" is a strong, raw tune in common meter ("C.M."), or 4/4 time. Its open-fifth harmonies and aching lines are a strong example of this early American style of singing and composition. While its title makes it an excellent piece for Easter, its more general spiritual subject matter makes it suitable year-round. The subtitle is from the original printing of "The Sacred Harp, where the piece was first published.
