By Alexandre Guerra. Composed by Alexandre Guerra. Arranged by Alexandre Guerra. This edition: pdf. 21st Century. 295 pages. Alexandre Guerra #1299775. Published by Alexandre Guerra (A0.1738481).
The narrative of the Amazon Warriors, as recounted by Carvajal — who transposes the Greek myth to the New World — inspired the musical work “Guerreiras Amazonas” by composer Alexandre Guerra.
The piece begins in the intense, torrential rapids of the Amazon River, evoking the undulating movement of the waters. Over this surface, the woodwinds and brass punctuate dramatically the perils and hardships of the adventure. The passage then evolves toward a point of repose, representing the approach to the sacred territory of the Amazons. Woodwind solos help to suggest the scene — the song of birds and the murmur of the forest.
From this placid moment, the mythical theme of the Amazons emerges, soon repeated in the dominant key. As the theme moves toward its climax, the spirits intensify, bringing forth the “warlike” tone that precedes the battle. The subject of a fugue then bursts forth, initiating the confrontation, which is subsequently answered but interrupted by the offensive of the Spaniards, recalling fragments from the opening rapids. Once again, the subject is reestablished — now in a new context — evolving modulantly and polytonally. The section culminates when the Amazons’ theme returns, this time even more imperial, performed with full force, leading to an assertive and grand conclusion.
