Widely regarded as his signature song, it was released by MCA Nashville on May 21, 1984, as part of Greenwood's third album, You've Got a Good Love Comin'. The song debuted at number seven on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart.
In the summer of 1984, "God Bless the U.S.A." was featured in a film about President Ronald Reagan, which was shown at the 1984 Republican National Convention, where Reagan was the presidential nominee. The song gained further attention during the 1988 U.S. presidential election when Greenwood performed it at the Republican National Convention and at campaign events for Republican nominee George H.W. Bush. It was also featured in television advertisements for Bush’s campaign.
The song experienced a resurgence in popularity during the Gulf War (1990–1991), prompting Greenwood to re-record it for his 1992 album American Patriot. Its impact grew even more after the September 11 attacks in 2001. Following the attacks, the song was re-released as a single and reached number 16 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot Country Songs charts. Greenwood released another re-recorded version in 2003, titled "God Bless the U.S.A. 2003," during the U.S. invasion of Iraq.
By July 2015, the song achieved platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), signifying over 1,000,000 units sold. Its popularity continued in the political sphere, notably being used at campaign rallies for Donald Trump, further cementing its place as an enduring patriotic anthem.
