Gesichter des Menschlichen (Faces of the Human Condition) for piano 4 hands
By Juan María Solare. Total duration: 10-12 minutes.

This four-hand piano piece has an unusual advantage: although it was conceived for intermediate or advanced students, professional performers can also play it without it ever sounding simplistic or juvenile/childish.

Another practical aspect is that, while the complete cycle has a coherent inner structure that traverses several spheres of the human condition, the four individual pieces can be performed independently.

Faces of the Human Condition (original German title: Gesichter des Menschlichen) is a compact four-piece cycle that explores four dimensions of human experience: intuition, thought, emotion and action. Each movement bears a Greek title with a German subtitle, marking its expressive focus and musical language.

The first movement, Nous, is a Prelude and Fugue built on tritone relationships and octatonic writing, evoking the sense of approaching an essential truth just out of reach. Logos unfolds with twelve-tone techniques used not as abstraction but as an architecture of thought, clear and expressive. Pneuma offers a lyrical, intimate atmosphere, centered around a single resonant pitch that anchors its post-Romantic melody. Finally, Soma brings the cycle into the realm of rhythm and physical presence, in a style reminiscent of post-Piazzolla neo-tango, full of energy and forward motion.

The cycle lasts about 10–12 minutes and offers a rich stylistic journey, suitable both for pedagogical contexts and for the concert stage.
