Tango: A ballroom dance of Latin-American origin characterized by long pauses and stylized body positions. This musical form was subsequently adopted by other countries, primarily France, Spain, and Italy. Many prominent composers have applied it to a wide variety of compositions. Using piano scores from both the Latin-American and Spanish rhythmic traditions, Gary Dahl has skillfully compiled and arranged French Tangos for Accordion. The music in this anthology was originally published from the late 1930s to 60's and is characterized by its romanticism, rich harmonies, and emotive melodies. These arrangements are orchestral in nature, befitting the accordion's various timbres and capabilities. In standard notation. Includes access to audio online.

French Tangos for Accordion by Gary Dahl
I’ve written a review of French Tangos by Gary Dahl for Sheet Music Plus years ago, but it seems to have disappeared from the website. I was a student of Gary and he gave me pointers for playing the songs in this book and even rewrote some of the phases and provided accent marks.
The book is a gem. Gary’s recording of each piece is flawless and worth the purchase price. My original hard copy version included a CD, but now the album is streamed online. No matter, it’s great. I bought the digital version recently because I prefer to markup and play from individual pages. The book is slightly larger than a letter-size page and is awkward to copy. Gary deprecated his work on the book and album somewhat. I think he felt that he was inadequately compensated for his work. But after years of studying and listening to Gary’s renditions I’ve come to fully realize what an amazing accomplishment it is. Gary is gone now, but to my mind this one volume is an indelible testament to his virtuosity and sensitivity to the instrument. It should be on every accordionist’s bookshelf. One final note. In recent years the internet has made the history and origin of the songs in this book much more accessible. Many of them were popular on French radio and sung by famous stars of the era. I was surprised that there even were lyrics to tangos. Also, iconic accordionists performed and/or composed many of these songs. They are sophisticated and challenging. Gary himself thought of them as being at the expert level. |
