Flying Dancers by Chen Yi Chamber Music - Sheet Music

By Chen Yi

Inspired by ancient artwork found on the walls of the Dunhuang Cave temples of China’s Silk Road, Chen Yi’s FLYING DANCERS is a short, acrobatic work for clarinet, viola, and cello. Translating the painted dancers’ motions into sound, bold rhythmic gestures are balanced with delicate filigree and counterpoint. Violists (and their listeners) will savor the audacious cadenza at the dramatic center of this brief, but lively, sonic ballet. For advanced performers.FLYING DANCERS was originally composed for alto flute, contrabassoon, andcello as part of the Composers Conference 80th anniversary celebration “8 for 80”commissioning project. The music was inspired by imagery of the flying dancerscarved on the walls of the Dunhuang Cave temples of China’s Silk Road.FLYING DANCERS was premiered by conference ensemble members BarryCrawford (alto flute), Adrian Morejon (contrabassoon), and Josh Gordon (cello),conducted by music director Vimbayi Kaziboni, at the Avaloch Farm Music Institutein Boscawen, NH, on August 4, 2024. Puente, in honor of Dr. Patricia Matos-Puente on herbirthday, with additional contributions from Kurt Rohde, Adda Kridler, EdwardJacobs, Emily Koh, Yu-Hui Chang, Derek Bermel, and Shalini Vijayan.FLYING DANCERS was adapted for clarinet, viola, and cello in 2025 forProfessors Zhu Shuang, Chen Yanfang, and Dong Xue of the Hainan UniversityConservatory of Music and Dance in China
