Enigma by Edward Elgar Brass Ensemble - Digital Sheet Music

By Edward Elgar

"Enigma Variations" was written by English composer Edward Elgar. Each variation is a musical picture of himself and some his colleagues. This version arranged for flexible brass ensemble features Variations 2, 4, 7, 12, 11 and 14. Variation II (“H.D.S-P.” Hew David Steuart-Powell) mimics the pianist’s quick finger exercises. Variation IV (“W.M.B.” William Meath Baker) is brash and energetic just like him. Variation VII (“Troyte” Arthur Troyte Griffith) portrays the rowdy yet endearing amateur pianist. Variation XII (“B.G.N.” Basil Nevinson) is a warm and lyrical tribute to the cellist. Variation XI (“G.R.S.” George Robertson Sinclair) is inspired by Sinclair’s bulldog Dan jumping in and out of a river. Lastly, Elgar paints a triumphant self-portrait in Variation XIV (“E.D.U.”). This versatile arrangement would be a thrilling part of a field show or brass band concert.
