Emberfall centers around a simple musical idea — two repeated notes, both E’s. This small motif runs throughout the piece, symbolizing tension and the moment one stands between light and shadow, creation and destruction.
Two contrasting themes take shape: one bold and driving, the other calm and determined — a voice striving to take the higher path even as darkness approaches. As the music unfolds, the two ideas exchange roles, growing in intensity until everything reaches a breaking point. Set in E minor with hints of Eastern and medieval color, Emberfall moves toward an inevitable fall — the moment when the low road is taken and the light fades.
The title reflects the image of something once burning bright slowly descending into darkness.

Features: First position throughout, mostly alternate bowing, introduction to a light martelé stroke, D.C. al Coda form, and attention to steady beat counting.
In the four open bars, performers may freely improvise — beginning softly and ending in complete silence for one full measure.
