Composed by Edward Elgar. Arranged by Ian Butterworth. 19th Century. 11 pages. Ian Butterworth #1010108. Published by Ian Butterworth (A0.1429395).
This part song, composed in 1907 when Elgar was on holiday in Rome, is unusual in that the upper voices are written in the key of A flat major while the lower voices are in G major. The composition is very suited to strings where the violins take the upper parts and the violas, cellos and basses take the lower parts. Some of the writing is antiphonal with the two parts of the orchestra answering each other but they gradually come together and the work ends quietly. 4 minutes approx. Copying of individual string parts is permitted provided they are for sole use by the purchaser.
Through his experience of teaching the violin and conducting youth orchestras over many years, Ian Butterworth's compositions and arrangements have been enjoyed by youth and amateur players.
