Dr Jazz was written in 1916 by Joe ‘ King’ Oliver and it became famous when it it was recorded by Jelly Roll Morton and his ‘Red Hot Peppers’. Jelly Roll’s recording set an early standard for ‘ collective improvisation’, contrasting solos and written ‘stops’ or ‘breaks’. It has been recorded many times and remains a particularly popular jazz standard with lyrics later added by the publisher, Walter Melrose.
