This practical vocal score of Mozart's towering operatic masterpiece, Don Giovanni, contains the original Prague version of 1787, whose musical and dramatic unity makes it infinitely preferable to any"mixed version".

His changes for the Vienna performances of 1788 are reproduced in an appendix.

The vocal score incorporates the recent research findings published in the critical report to the"New Mozart Edition"(II/5/17, 2003), thereby satisfying the most discerning reader.

Don Giovanni
What an edition this is! It contains all of the music Mozart wrote. I find it interesting how so much now simply put within a schumer score, for example, are put in this one in the appendix. I fully understand why. When those new additions are put within the body of the work, as is customary now, the flow of the work really changes. When done as Mozart first wrote it, it is a very tight fitting opera, and to some said to be the most perfect opera written. Those additions, which in truth are really arias written by Mozart to replace ones that singers couldn't sing (like the two tenor arias, or the one to replace O mio tesoro, which a second tenor could not sing) change the flavour of the work a great deal when added without removing the aria they were meant to replace. And one of Elvira's arias, now probably her most famous, is written out in two keys. It is a masterful edition, and I am glad I bought it. One can still add everything in the appendix into the opera as suggested, but one can actually leave those things out and see just how tight-knit the drama is in it original conception. Great work.

Well done!
The Barenreiter score is what we are using for our production at the University of Michigan. It is thorough, up to date in historical research and easy to read. Be aware that it is in Italian and German texts.
