Perhaps the complexity of modern life encourages current composers to write music that harkens back to the simplicity of early America. Pepper Choplin's Deep Waters does just that in his a cappella composition based on the fifth chapter of Luke, exemplified by plain harmonies and the story-telling aspect of the text. It also works well as an introit anthem as the congregation is encouraged to join the folk-like melody at the end of the anthem.
