The lyrics to "Danny Boy" were written by Fred Weatherly in 1910 and set to the traditional Irish melody "Londonderry Air" in 1913. This arrangement by Marcia L. McKenna can be performed as a solo piano piece, but it can also be sung and played on the guitar, as guitar fret diagrams and a vocal line have been included.
This intermediate level arrangement was written with Frederick's sentimental lyrics in mind and therefore should mostly be played quietly and thoughtfully, with rubato. There is a nice surprise on page 4 as just a hint of the song Avé Maria appears for one bar, when "...kneel and say an Avé there for me..." is mentioned in the lyrics.
This arrangement starts quietly with grace notes and glisssandos to mimic the sound of pipes, and then becomes more elaborate and flowing on the second page, continuing to build and fade as the emotions in the lyrics dictate.
