Dit concerto voor basklarinet is het meest ambitieuze werk van Kees Vlak. Voor hij dit werk componeerde, heeft hij urenlang naar een begaafd basklarinettist geluisterd. Zo ontdekte hij dat het instrument een omvang van vijf octaven heeft en dat het ook lichter aanspeelt dan de gewone Bes klarinet. Tenslotte werd hij vooral door de mooie unieke klankkleur in het hoge register bekoord. Al deze elementen speelden een rol bij het tot stand komen van dit concerto. De cadens eist wel een grote vaardigheid en kunstzinnig-heid van de solist. Deel 1. werd in strenge sonate-vorm gecomponeerd en bevat de fijne cadens. Deel 2. werd in liedvorm gecomponeerd. Deel 3. werd als een scherzo opgevat, zij het met talrijke mutaties. Zo vangt de herhaling met het tweede thema aan, terwijl het eerste thema het werk opnieuw afsluit.

This is Kees Vlak's most ambitious composition. Before writing this work, the composer listened for many hours to a most gifted bass clarinet player. So he discovered that the instrument ranges over five octaves and needs a lighter blow than the ordinary B flat clarinet. The sonority of the instrument in the upper register really charmed the composer. All these elements deeply influenced the composition. The cadenza requires a fine technique and a real artistic feeling from the soloist. Part 1 is written in a sonata form with a cadenza. Part 2 is written in a song form. Part 3 is a scherzo with many mutations. For instance, the repeat starts with the second theme, whereas the initial theme concludes the work.

Voici l'oeuvre la plus ambitieuse de Kees Vlak. Avant de composer cette oeuvre, il a longuement écouté un clarinettiste basse de grand talent. Ainsi il a découvert que l'instrument a une tessiture de cinq octaves et s'embouche de façon plus légère que la clarinette ordinaire en Si bémol. Les riches sonorités du régistre aigu de l'instrument ont véritablement charmé le compositeur. Ces différents aspects ont influencé le compositeur lorsqu'il a écrit ce concerto. La cadence, surtout, exige une grande technique et un sens artistique profond du soliste. La première partie est composée en forme de sonate avec une cadence. La deuxième partie est écrite en forme de 'lied'. La troisième partie est un scherzo avec plusieurs mutations,comme par exemple la reprise qui débute par le deuxième thème. Par contre, c'est le premier thème qui conclut l'oeuvre.

Mit diesem Konzert hat Kees Vlak ein ganz hochstrebendes Werk komponiert. Er hat erst manchmal dem Spiel eines begabten Basklarinettisten zugehört. So entdeckte er daß das Instrument einen Umfang von 5 Oktaven hat und leichter als eine Klarinette in b angeblasen wird. Er war besonders von dem Klang des hohen Registers der Baßklarinette begeistert. Vor allem die Kadenz ist anspruchsvoll für den Solisten. Der 1. Teil ist in strenger Sonate-form komponiert worden und enthält eine Kadenz. Der 2. Teil zeigt eine Liedform. Der 3. Teil ist ein Scherzo. Bei der Wiederholung kommt erst das zweite Thema zurück und dann wird das Werk mit dem Anfangsthema abgeschlossen.
