Combo Sounds of Big Band Era
The Bullock Big Band Combo books could be rated anywhere one to five stars depending on how they are used. I've used them for a long time and they are excellent writing for three horns, especially the treble cleff instruments cl,tp,as,and ts. Range is comfortable for most players. Difficulty presents challenge for most players. They really are too short for performance or dance band use, requiring thought and jiggering as to how to extend them. Best use is for three horns, tho we've been successful using four or sometimes five, often using a drop voice technique for a trombone or tenor sax in the combo mix. Or, double the parts for use by more than three horns. The books can by used by one or two horns. Rhythm books include a written bass line, chords, and melody.
