Pitfalls of self publication
One wonders why SheetmusicPlus would have accepted this self published piece. It is amateur, pedantic, devoid of expressiveness, and languorous. Need one say more?What could have been a well executed trio on the lovely folk hymn tune, suffers from that indicative trait of amateurism - a complete lack of regard for forward-directed harmonic motion. The contrapuntal voices bear no relationship to the cantus firmus, nor advance tension toward cadential points. In a word, it is a poorly constructed bore and a good example of the ego that drives unvetted and self-declared composers.Avoid at all costs and, if this degree of difficulty is not an issue, choose the classic Samuel Barber setting of the tune instead!
