Carpathian Swing is an energetic Gypsy-esque dance tune in 7/4 for an Advanced Intermediate Alto Sax player that has Piano and / or Guitar accompaniment. It was inspired by the folk music that I heard while visiting Romania. It’s not authentic Romanian folk music, but a misty reflection of that style. Here are some things to know about this piece:
* Even though it’s in 7/4, neither the meter nor tempo ever changes. * The primary melody is repeated several times, but with subtle differences. * The range sits just a bit toward the lower end of the instrument’s range to imitate the more non-professional playing of most folk musicians. However, it’s possible to play certain sections up an octave for more contrast, if desired. * There are two separate Piano and Guitar parts to cut down on the number of page turns. One has the guitar chords in concert key. The other has the guitar chords written to be played with a capo on the third fret.
This makes a great contest piece.
