Drawing on his country's rich folk tradition, Lorenzo Fernandez's three Brazilian Suites are elegant yet complex distillations of popular forms, ranging from the gentle cradle song of Suite No. 1 to the monomaniacal, driving Jongo that serves as the finale of No. 3. Reminiscent in many instances of the Mazurkas of Chopin, the suites are a wonderful entry point into the rhythmic delicacy of Brazilian folk music, lovingly preserved in Lorenzo Fernandez's careful notation, and in his pianistic style, generally expressive and approachable, but capable of great virtuosity in moments of passion.
