The first movement is long enough to serve as a standalone recital-length piece in its own right. It sets a dark mood, which carries over into the adagio, where two contrasting themes are juxtaposed with the trumpets in octaves, and the horn and tuba in octaves. The themes become more insistent until the movement climaxes in a forte that sounds more like a large ensemble than a quintet, before calming to a quiet, yet still dark, conclusion.
The third movement explodes into a driving, fast-paced and somewhat dissonant allegro. It isn't arbitrarily dissonant in the way many 20th-century pieces can be, but just enough to maintain a sense of being slightly off-balance. That feeling is supported by contrasting dymanic swells. After the tumult, the piece ends softly, but not gently. The music is quite challenging; not for the meek.
