The middle movement is moderate and steady, and continues the dark feeling of the opening movement. It affords the horn and tuba opportunities to play lyrically and thoughtfully, as well as challenging the first trumpet and horn to play delicately and with control in the upper register.
A triumphant maestoso introduces a brisk 9/8 finale with a 2+2+2+3 feel with plenty of challenges for fast articulations and for lining up overlapping rhythmic patterns. Although the tempo is bright, the music maintains its serious character throughout. The piece culminates with a return to the maestoso for a strong finish.
