By Elvis Presley. By Billy Hayes and Jay Johnson. Arranged by Cascia Talbert. This edition: pdf. Christmas, Rock. Score and part. 4 pages. Cascia Talbert #1275656. Published by Cascia Talbert (A0.1711981).
"Blue Christmas" is a holiday classic written by Billy Hayes and Jay W. Johnson, most famously recorded by Elvis Presley, though its first recording was made by Doye O’Dell in 1948. The song tells a story of unrequited love during the festive season and has become a timeless standard, particularly cherished in the country genre.
O’Dell’s original 1948 version was followed in 1949 by three popular recordings: one by country star Ernest Tubb, another by musical conductor Hugo Winterhalter with his orchestra and chorus, and a third by bandleader Russ Morgan and his orchestra, featuring vocals from Morgan and the Morganaires. Tubb’s rendition reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Most-Played Juke Box (Country & Western) Records chart in January 1950. Winterhalter’s version climbed to No. 9 on Billboard’s Records Most Played by Disk Jockeys chart, while Morgan’s recording peaked at No. 11 on the Best-Selling Pop Singles chart. Both Winterhalter and Morgan used shorter, pop-style edits of the lyrics.
Also in 1950, crooner Billy Eckstine recorded his own version, accompanied by Russ Case’s orchestra. This arrangement—often mistakenly credited to Winterhalter—closely resembles the shortened lyrics that have since become the widely accepted standard.
This arrangement is written for flute and piano.
