Birdland, recorded by Weather Report for their 1977 album Heavy Weather is one of the most recognizable jazz tunes around today, and has subsequently been recorded by a raft of artists, including Maynard Ferguson, Buddy Rich and Quincy Jones (with Quincy winning two Grammys for his version). Named after the Birdland club in New York, which is in turn named after ‘Yardbird’ Charlie Parker, this piece has a drive that few others can replicate. A strong drummer and bass section will set you up well, but don’t fret – each section gets their chance to shine! A tenor sax solo (cued in altos) features in the latter half, setting up for a rousing ending. This arrangement will provide great repertoire for most high-school level bands (UK grade 5+). Use liberally across your programmes, this tune is perfect to round off a concert as a rousing finale!
