I heard an instrumental version of this piece on the radio and was drawn to the opening chord changes. I was not familiar with it and in researching it discovered it is originally a song for voice and piano. Perhaps it is better known in the vocal community. It is a wistful and gentle song.
This instrumentation is heavy on the big flutes: piccolo, one C-flute, three alto flutes, two basses, and contra. The contra is required, but could be played on a regular bass flute if no contra is available. I think this piece calls for the darker colors of the big flutes. The vocal melody is traded around among the three alto parts.
Not difficult, the challenges are some slurred intervals and playing well at soft dynamics. Total run time is just over a minute and a half. It would be a lovely interlude between longer pieces on a concert program.
