"Away in a Manger" is a Christmas standard. This arrangement honors that standing, that familiarity, and at the same time takes a fresh approach. It both flows along in a lively manner yet is also quiet and contemplative, as befits a musical description of the Nativity. It incorporates the two most common musical settings for this carol, James R. Murray’s "Mueller" and William J. Kirkpatrick’s "Cradle Song." The introduction establishes a third theme, meditative in nature, which is repeated throughout and then re-stated at the end the piece.
Recommended tempo is 112, and all notes are within normal playing range of the instruments. Tuba does, however, play one F below its scale. Starting key is G, changing to F and then to A-flat. There are no tricky turns or figures.
