Mediation on Prelude No. 1 in C Major from The Well-Tempered Clavier by J.S. Bach.
In 1853, French Romantic composer Charles Gounod improvised a melody over Johann Sebastian Bach’s C Major Prelude (BWV 846) from his Well-Tempered Clavier (written around 1722). The work was published as “Meditation” and later adapted with the familiar Latin “Ave Maria” text in 1859. This famous collaboration has become a beloved piece for weddings and funerals. It is also performed during the Christmas season.
This arrangement features the melody in the cello with the accompaniment in the upper two voices.
