The seasons have long been a subject for composers to describe in music and new possibilities and interpretations becoming limited. My approach to describing Autumn was focusing on the industrious nature of the season; in particular the hard work collecting in the harvest and preparing for the long winter months.
The piece is in the structure of a Scherzo and uses two English folk melodies (inspired by the collections of Cecil Sharp and works of Ralph Vaughan Williams) to separate the scherzo from the trio. The first folk song, Autumn Comes, is set to a simple ostinato emphasising the industrious nature of harvest. The trio section is inspired by the folk song, The Hundred Haymakers. The regular pulse of the song emphasises the work song nature, and the staggered entries and overlapping bring about images of works in the fields with their different roles working towards a common goal. Echoes of the first folk song are heard throughout this section suggesting that Autumn and in turn Winter are never far away.
